Are workshops effective learning tools?
Workshops are more interactive than listening to a lecture. Studies have shown that we tend to learn more when we learn with peers as we tend to be more comfortable to challenge ideas and share information. In doing this we are interacting with knowledge which gives it a really good chance of being added to the information we use more regularly when making important decisions.
The following are a couple of workshops that have been tried and tested with good results. If you have a need in a particular area please don't hesitate to contact us so that we can work something out.

Why does my child push my buttons?
We can all relate a story (or a few) of where someone has done something that really 'pushes a button' seemingly wanting to drive us CRAZY! Children seem to be especially adept at finding and triggering this response in us, but if we are honest there are probably a few peers, family members and/or colleagues that have this particular talent as well.
This is a fun, interactive workshop that looks at temperament. Our central nervous systems are all wired a little differently. Understanding your temperament and being able to understand the temperaments of your children, your spouse, your friends etc. will not only show why particular things annoy, while others delight, but will also show how learning to accommodate each other will make an incredible difference in your relationships.

Ready, Steady... Read
This is a wonderful workshop for parents (teachers have enjoyed this workshop too) with children from Gr. 0 - Gr. 3. These children are being introduced to literacy and have to make sense out of books. Some of them love it and some find it hard going. We can make a huge difference in their experience by finding ways to make this FUN and confidence building.
This workshop gives parents a quick uncomplicated peek at how our brains like to process information. We explore how different brains have a preference for a particular learning style. This means that some teaching methods of reading will be more effective than others when your child is learning to read. We also look at the roles knowledge, emotion and curiosity play in learning to read.
We will look at the types of books that will be more likely to promote literacy and learning and parents will learn how to do "Paired Reading" with their children.

Promoting Literacy Development
This is a fun interactive workshop with parents or teachers for children who are learning to write. This helps inject motivation and laughter into learning to write. It promotes a shift from just getting through a task or doing repetitive learning towards working in a meaningful, interactive and fun way encouraging curiosity and building confidence.
These activities and ideas are taken from the work of Elaine Harcombe, a true leader in the field of Educational Psychology and Learning Support. Her development of the "Cognitive Approach to Literacy Instruction" is a work of love and pure genius. |

Study with confidence
When moving on to High School learners discover that is difficult to fly by the seat of their pants as the workload increases both inside and outside the classroom. Tests and exams are scheduled over the same short period which can be very stressful.
This workshop can be done over the course of a day or over 3 shorter sessions.
Learners will explore and identify their preferred learning style. They are exposed to different studying strategies and encouraged to use what works for them. They are also encouraged to evaluate current cognitive strategies so that they can replace those that are not really working for them.
Learners are given an opportunity to put together a study schedule and learn how to adapt that schedule (as we all know that life changes all the time). Learners will also learn different test taking strategies as well as tips on how to de-stress and stay focused.
